Hello bookworms!

The next DRUUMM fiction bookclub meeting will occur August 10th at 5 pm Pacific / 6 pm Mountain / 7 pm Central / 8 pm Eastern. Be prepared to discuss chapters 18 to the end of the book of the exciting post-apocalyptic book Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler.

All DRUUMM Book Club groups are for members of DRUUMM only. If you would like to invite a friend to join the book discussion, make sure they are registered with DRUUMM.

Here's some questions to ponder for the next meeting. Feel free to come up with questions to discuss.

Chapter 18-19

1. Why do you think Lauren continues to develop and share Earthseed despite the danger and chaos around her?

Chapter 20-21

2. In these chapters, violence escalates. How do the group members’ responses to violence reflect their personalities or past traumas?

3. What does Lauren’s decision to help strangers say about her beliefs and leadership? Would you have made the same choice?

Chapter 24

4. Earthseed emphasizes adaptability and shaping destiny. How does the group’s arrival at Bankole’s land symbolize this theme?

Chapter 25

5. Reflect on the final Earthseed verses: how do they tie together the book’s themes of change, community, and future-building?

6. Do you think Lauren’s vision of Earthseed is realistic within the world Butler has created? Why or why not?

General questions:

11. What does this ending leave you feeling about humanity’s potential for survival and growth?

12. How do the experiences from chapter 18 onwards shape your understanding of what it takes to build community in the midst of collapse?

13. Would you join Earthseed if you were living in Lauren’s world? Why or why not?

14. What parallels do you see between the society Lauren navigates and our world today?

Wishing you all the best,

Sean Alphonse
